More than halfway through season 22, The Block has thrown just about everything at the protection on site: finished rooms next to live construction, tight deadlines, and requests that need an answer the same day.
We caught up with our own, Mark Johnson, Regional Sales Manager for Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia, to find out what it takes to supply The Block. Here’s the full interview and a few highlights.
What makes protecting The Block different?
"It's fast-paced, with a lot of sudden demands and emergencies where they need product at short notice. That plays to our strengths: a large range, large stock, on-site support from our project specialists, and same day delivery."
How do you decide what goes where?
"After a reveal, our project specialist walks through with the contestants and works out the best protection for each surface: floors, windows, doors, stairs, handrails, benchtops."
What surprised you most?
"The demand for ZipWall®. It's a dust barrier, which is great when finished areas sit next to areas still under construction. Once the contestants saw how good it was, demand just grew."

Did the show teach Protecta anything?
"We don't normally install, but here we got hands-on with our own products, and that feeds straight into product development. Early on, we used our new 8mm Protecta Board XTRA, the yellow one, to support scaffolding on a new clip-lock metal roof. It's been used successfully since."
The one takeaway for builders?
"Protect your work early. Spend a little on protection straight after the surface goes in, and you'll save a lot on delays and rectification in the long run."
