Case Study: Top-Level Protection for Multi-Purpose Roof Upgrade

Project Details:

• Rogers Construction
• St Marys Road Sydney NSW 2000

Products Used:

• Protecta Board XTRA
• Protecta Guard
• Protecta Cloth Tape

Key Outcomes:

• Reduced installation time and labour
• Protected concrete tiling from heavy machinery
• Delivered residue-free handrail protection

Background

The public seating and recreation space near Sydney landmark St Marys Cathedral doubles as the roof for the Cook and Phillip Park Pool. Recent improvements to the pool roof waterproofing and renovations of the timber seating area will enhance the function and visual appeal of the public area.

Challenge

Working in a confined public space, the project’s main contractor, Rogers Construction faced several key protection challenges to keep the renovation on track and avoid costly damage.

Four key areas were identified:

1. Outdoor Durability: Protection materials needed to withstand extended exposure to rain and sunlight without deteriorating or leaching onto concrete and glass.

2. Simple Installation: Lightweight, easy-to-install materials were essential to reduce labour requirements and maintain workflow efficiency.

3. Heavy-Duty Impact Resistance: Concrete tiling required robust protection against damage from heavy machinery, including motorised pallet jacks transporting over one tonne of materials.

4. Handrail Protection: Stainless steel handrails needed reliable, non-abrasive impact protection during the renovation.

Solution

Protecta Board XTRA was selected in two thicknesses to suit different site needs.
The 3mm Protecta Board XTRA was applied to glass balustrades, with felt backing preventing scratches and the polypropylene composition ensuring no leaching — a safer alternative to MDF or plywood.

The 5mm Protecta Board XTRA was laid over the concrete tiles to handle the weight and impact of machinery. With a P4 slip rating, it also supported safe access for workers in wet conditions. The lightweight boards required only one to two people to install - halving the labour requirements typically needed for heavier alternatives.
Protecta Guard was wrapped around handrails to shield stainless steel from impact and abrasion, and Protecta Cloth Tape was used to secure all materials without taping directly onto finished surfaces.

Final Result

The Protecta solution minimised installation time and labour costs while offering robust protection across the site. Finished surfaces were safeguarded, and the project remained on schedule, supporting a smooth and damage-free renovation for Rogers Construction
