Background

Construction group John Holland is the Principal Contractor for the first stage of co-owners Dexus and Dexus Wholesale Property Fund’s $2.5 Billion Waterfront Brisbane development. The former Eagle Street Pier site was previously a dining precinct and fixture in the Golden Triangle business district since 1989, and under a new masterplan will be replaced with two new commercial office towers, destination dining, and 1 ha of public realm space, in time for the Brisbane Olympics in 2032

Challenge

The Riverwalk connecting with Eagle Street Pier needed to be temporarily closed during demolition activities for safety reasons. Given the importance of reopening the Riverwalk, it was paramount to protect the existing structure from demolition works, creating a need for protection that could be quickly and easily applied and reused as required.

The Eagle Street Pier site set for demolition.

Solution

Principal contractor John Holland worked with demolition subcontractor Delta Group to determine the most effective solution. Delta Group had previous experience with the use of Protecta Board XTRA, recommending the product as the optimal solution in this environment. Protecta Board XTRA
provides remarkable impact resistance, combined with lightweight and easy-to-handle attributes. Other important factors included its P4 slip rating, cost-effectiveness compared to plywood, resistance to leaching, and reusability.

Final Result

The result for this stage of the project was a resounding success. Protecta Board XTRA not only reduced costs due to its reusability, but also provided exceptional protection for the timber section of the Riverwalk. When the Protecta Board XTRA was removed, there was no damage to the Riverwalk. This achievement left John Holland extremely satisfied with the outcome, delivering on the project requirements.
